What we did:

Queensland's 2020 Local Series was held at the Darling Downs Soaring Club over the 11th to 13th September with a #yesgirlsglide theme, encouraging female juniors to participate. We had a great turn out with 12 keen young pilots in attendance.

The weekend catered to all levels of flying, with four female juniors going for their first glider flights (and staying to start their instructional flying!), several post solo check flights & conversions and half a dozen A, B & C cert students undertaking cross-country mentoring on the Sunday!

On Saturday morning, Jo Davis very kindly presented a PowerPoint on Sports Psychology and its importance in gliding (particularly for x-country & competition flying). Flying Saturday consisted of mostly instructional and check flights with the exception of one B certificate student taking a two-seater with a coach and flying a 300km task despite gusty conditions! Later in the afternoon came packing up and a pizza night at the club.

Sunday morning Jo Davis took a group of 5/6 students aside for an introduction to cross country flying preparation and flight planning. She set a manageable 150km task and flew with two students around the task in succession and another local instructor did similarly. The single seaters were also put to good use, smashing out the task and having a ball - some experienced local pilots going around the task twice with us. The afternoon saw happy faces and lots of photos before packing up for the weekend.

All in all a very fun weekend, and a bit of a (safe!) break from the Covid lifestyle. Looking forward to the next one.
